newest member of the zoo.

The 3-foot-long reptile was discovered Thursday in the pond. Staff from the zoo assessed the situation Thursday and got to work Friday working to remove the slithery scoundrel, but capturing it proved difficult.

The gator showed itself several times Friday, but quickly vanished. Workers began pumping and lowering the pond about noon.

Mr. Gaverick was confident the alligator would stay in the pond and could prey on small fish. However, he said it

would not have made it through the winter if not captured.

“It’s in a pond with a lot of sticks and branches,” Mr. Garverick said. “It’s muddy, and we’re falling down sometimes. He’s in his element, and we’re not.”

Caimans are native to Mexico and Central and South America and are often purchased as exotic pets. Alligators, meanwhile, are found in the southeastern United States.

The pond is often called the Biology Pond and is used by students at both schools for academic study. A teacher alerted school administration after spotting the animal Thursday morning.

complaint and not to open an official investigation cannot be appealed, Lieutenant Toney said. Internal affairs findings can only be appealed by the Civilian Police Review Board after an official investigation takes place.

An investigation could be opened if new evidence is

submitted, he said.

Mr. Rose has said there is another video of the incident but that he could not yet release it based on the advice of the family’s attorney. Once the criminal charges against the twins are resolved, he said they plan to file a lawsuit. “We’re not going to stop,” he said.

Isle Royale National Park
receives additional wolves

HOUGHTON, Mich. — Officials said four gray wolves from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula were transported for resettlement in Isle Royale National Park to help restore the predator species on the Lake Superior island chain, though one of them died shortly after arriving.

The National Park Service said Friday that Isle Royale’s wolf population is now 17.

It had fallen to two before the project began in 2018.

Officials plan to relocate a total of 20-30 wolves from Canada, Michigan, and Minnesota to the park over

several years, including the animals that have already been taken there.

Wolves prey on moose that can damage the island’s vegetation.

Superintendent Phyllis Green says obtaining animals from different places will prevent the inbreeding that nearly wiped out the population.

The newest wolves — two males and two females — were flown in Sept. 13.

One female died shortly afterward. A necropsy is planned but Ms. Green said the relocation is stressful for wolves.
